Something Is Stuck Between My Teeth — What Should I Do?

Everyone occasionally gets something stuck between their teeth. If the object remains there for an extended period, it can cause irritation to your oral tissues and potentially lead to other complications. How should you handle the situation when you have something stuck between your teeth? Should you call a local emergency dentist? This blog post offers practical guidance.

What Not to Do

In an attempt to dislodge an object stuck between their teeth, some people use sharp objects, such as a knife or wooden toothpick, to poke the offending debris out of place. This is not a good idea; there is a strong chance you could accidentally injure your soft oral tissues or damage your tooth enamel. There are safer methods to remove debris from your mouth.

Removing the Object

In most cases, objects stuck between the teeth can be removed without professional assistance. Here are a few methods that are often successful:

  • Use floss. If regular flossing methods do not work, tie a knot in the floss and then move the floss backward and forward between your teeth.
  • Swish with water. Vigorous movement of water might loosen or remove the object.
  • Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables. Items like apples and celery have a rough texture that can help clean teeth and shift stuck items out of place.
  • Use your tongue or finger. Creating suction action with your tongue might move debris. You can also gently try to remove stuck objects with your fingers (just make sure you thoroughly wash your hands first).

When to Call Your Dentist

Occasionally getting something stuck between your teeth may not be anything to worry about, but certain situations require professional help:

  • You frequently get things stuck between your teeth. This might indicate a cavity, gum disease, or dental alignment problem.
  • You experience persistent pain or discomfort. Stuck food debris can contribute to infections, severely inflamed tissues, and other issues. Any ongoing pain is a reason to visit your dentist.
  • You cannot remove the object on your own. Dentists have special instruments that might help you remove particularly stubborn debris.

Getting something stuck between your teeth can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and downright annoying! Follow the tips in this article to address the situation safely and effectively.
