New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier Smile

January 1, 2023

Notebook for writing down New Year’s resolutions

We’re at the start of a new year, and you have probably already set some goals for 2023. Perhaps you want to lose weight, go the gym more often, or start learning a new language. Those are all worthwhile goals. But have you thought about adopting a few New Year’s resolutions for a healthier smile? Read on below to learn about some simple things you can do to take better care of your teeth and gums in 2023.

Floss Daily

Many people find flossing to be a chore. However, it is important because it removes plaque and food particles from the tight spaces between your teeth — areas where your toothbrush cannot reach. Ask your dental team for guidance on proper flossing technique. If you have mobility issues, you might try using a water flosser (oral irrigator) instead.

Brush for Two Full Minutes

Lots of people brush their twice teeth a day, but many of them do not brush for a full two minutes. You should spend about 30 seconds cleaning each quadrant of your mouth. A simple timer on your smartphone can help you track your brushing time. You could also invest in an electric toothbrush that vibrates when it is time to switch to a different section of your mouth.

Cut Back on Sugar

It’s common for people to resolve to “eat clean” when a new year starts. However, they usually abandon their goals after just a few days or weeks. Instead of trying to eliminate sugar from your entire entirely, focus on cutting back. For example, you might try eating fruit instead of a candy bar, indulging in dessert less often, or drinking water instead of soda. Since sugar is a major contributor to cavities, your efforts are likely to safeguard your teeth against decay.

Start Using a Tongue Scraper

Brushing your tongue with your toothbrush is a good way to remove food particles and bacteria from it. However, an even more thorough method for cleaning your tongue is to use a simple device called a tongue scraper. They are very affordable and easy to use. You might be surprised by the difference it makes!

Visit Your Dentist

The standard recommendation is that everyone visits their dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Why not start the year off with an exam and a refreshing cleaning? Then, schedule your next appointment for the middle of the year. Regularly seeing your dentist is vital for catching dental problems in their early stages, before they become serious and require invasive treatment.

What do you plan to accomplish in 2023? Sticking to the above resolutions can help your smile to thrive this year and well into the future.
