Can Your Oral Health Affect Your Metabolism?

Overweight woman thinking about metabolism and oral health

Most people are familiar with some of the key factors that affect metabolism, including age, body composition, and sex. But did you know that your oral health can also affect your body’s metabolic processes? This blog post discusses some of the science behind how they are connected and what you can do to support both your metabolism and your smile.

Gum Disease and Metabolic Syndrome

Gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria that attack the gum tissue, leading to inflammation and a range of serious oral symptoms. Unfortunately, gum disease does much more than just affect the mouth. Researchers in Tokyo discovered that one of the bacteria that causes gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis, can alter the composition of the microbiome in the gut. That might sound a little complicated, but the bottom line is simple: gum disease affects the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut.

Without a properly balanced gut microbiome, you are at an increased risk of systemic inflammation and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that occur simultaneously. Together, they can interfere with how your body processes energy. Metabolic syndrome is often associated with insulin resistance, which is a precursor to diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is also correlated with heart disease, cancer, obesity, and other serious illnesses.

What You Can Do

Clearly, oral health is a matter of overall health. Here are some steps you can take to protect your mouth and your metabolism:

  • Attend regular checkups with your dentist. About half of the adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease. Regularly visiting your dentist can help you to identify and address gum problems as soon as possible. Also, be sure to keep your dentist updated on any developments in your overall health, such as if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or insulin resistance.
  • Focus on oral hygiene. Poor oral hygiene is one of the most common causes of gum disease. You can lower your risk by brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing once a day. Be sure to always clean the area along your gumline.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking cigarettes is associated with an increased risk of both gum disease and metabolic syndrome. If you are struggling to quit, your dentist or primary care practitioner may be able to provide you with valuable advice.
  • Make wise food choices. Eating a lot of sugar can increase your risk of insulin resistance and allow harmful bacteria to flourish in your mouth. You should also limit saturated fats and highly processed foods.

Do you want to do all you can to support your metabolic wellness? A happy gut may start with a healthy mouth!
