Oral Cancer: Another Big Reason Not to Skip Your Next Dental Checkup

oral cancer ribbonRegularly attending dental checkups comes with a long list of benefits. You’ll maintain a fresher mouth, you’ll be able to avoid most oral health problems, and your smile will look and feel its best. But there is another big reason why you should never skip a dental appointment: oral cancer. Most dentists include a screening for this disease as part of a routine checkup. A simple, quick, and painless exam could save your life!

Everyone Is at Risk

It’s a common misconception that only individuals who smoke or chew tobacco are at risk for oral cancer. While tobacco use is a significant contributing factor in most cases of oral cancer, anyone can develop this disease, regardless of their lifestyle choices. You may be particularly at risk if you drink a lot of alcohol, spend excessive amounts of time outdoors, or are over 50 years old. Keep in mind as well that the human papilloma virus (HPV) may lead to oral cancer. HPV is quite common, and most people do not even realize they have it because it doesn’t always present obvious symptoms.

The Oral Cancer Screening Process

The oral cancer screening is simple, fast, and comfortable. During your appointment, either your hygienist or dentist will perform a visual and tactile examination of your mouth and the surrounding areas. They’ll check for any suspicious tissues. For example, they’ll be on the lookout for usual lumps or swelling, patches of discoloration, and loose teeth — all of which potential signs of oral cancer. You should also be sure to mention it if you’ve experienced any changes to your voice, unexplained weight loss, or a persistent sore throat. If your dentist suspects that you might have oral cancer, they’ll help you arrange for follow-up testing.

Given how easy it is to get checked for oral cancer, there’s really no reason for anyone to neglect regular screenings. Experts recommend that all adults get screened once a year. If you have any significant risk factors (such as tobacco use), more frequent screenings may be advisable.

The Life-Saving Power of Oral Cancer Screenings

Some people do not get screened for oral cancer because they believe they’ll notice any problems without the help of a dental professional. However, the signs of the disease are sometimes so subtle that only someone with a trained eye can spot them, especially when the cancer is still in its earliest stages.

The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the chances of survival. In fact, the 5-year survival rate in cases where the cancer was diagnosed early on is around 80 percent. The survival rate in advanced cases is below 40 percent. It’s not an exaggeration to say that an oral cancer screening could save your life!

When was the last time you got screened for oral cancer? If it has been more than a year, schedule a checkup with your dentist right away.
