Schedule a Checkup<\/h2>\r\nIf it has been more than six months since your last dental visit, now is the time to schedule an appointment. A thorough checkup<\/a> will let you know whether you have any developing oral health issues that might cause you pain later on. For example, your dentist might notice that you have a new cavity or that you are in the early stages of gum disease. Being aware of such issues, and getting them treated promptly, can prevent a dental disaster from ruining your family festivities.\r\n

Be Choosy About Treats<\/h2>\r\nThis time of year, delicious goodies are everywhere. You can sip on hot, flavorful drinks, indulge in all sorts of baked goods, and munch on sweet candies \u2014 but you have to be careful. Most of such treats contain high levels of sugar. Sticky foods, like divinity or taffy, have the potential to dislodge fillings. Hard treats, like candy canes or peanut brittle, could even break your teeth. It\u2019s okay to indulge in your favorite seasonal foods, but do so in moderation, and be careful when you chew so you do not damage your precious smile.\r\n

Don\u2019t Use Your Teeth as a Tool<\/h2>\r\nIt\u2019s wise to invest in a small multi-tool that you can use when you need to cut ribbon, open a package, or snip the tag off your new sweater. Otherwise, you might be tempted to use your teeth to accomplish the task at hand; doing so might cause your teeth to break. Remember, your teeth are meant to chew food \u2014 they are not designed as a substitute for scissors.\r\n

Control Your Stress<\/h2>\r\nIf you are stressed, you might bite your fingernails or grind your teeth \u2014 both of which are bad for your oral health. By planning well for your seasonal activities, and taking some time for yourself, you may be able to keep your stress levels as low as possible. If you do find that you are grinding your teeth at night, a nightguard from your dentist can help to protect your smile.\r\n\r\nThis time of year can be very enjoyable \u2014 but it can also be dangerous for your teeth.
